"The 39 Steps" by John Buchan is adapted as a spy thriller in which British intelligence agents attempt to stop the master spy Sidney Clock from destroying England with a coded world war message. When Clock uses a secret code reading "Thirty-Nine Steps, High Tide, Ten Seventeen P.M." to communicate his destructive plans, agent Hannay and his allies work to decode the message and intercept Clock before he can leave the country and deliver the information that will trigger a third world war.
