Far Sector #1 marks the first appearance of Sojourner "Jo" Mullein, a Black woman and former NYPD officer who became a Green Lantern assigned to an unnumbered sector far outside Guardian Space — one of the most fully realized new DC characters introduced in the 2020s. The series represented a landmark intersection of prestige prose fiction and superhero comics, as it was the comic book debut of N.K. Jemisin, who at the time of publication was already the only author to have won three consecutive Best Novel Hugo Awards. Its twelve-issue run earned the 2022 Hugo Award for Best Graphic Story or Comic and received Eisner nominations, signaling that the broader literary world had taken notice of the medium. Perhaps most significantly, Jo Mullein proved durable enough to graduate from an imprint maxiseries into the main DC continuity, joining John Stewart in the relaunched Green Lantern title during Infinite Frontier — a rare feat for a brand-new character — and later appearing in the Absolute Universe line.

History

The concept originated with Gerard Way, curator of DC's Young Animal imprint, who pitched Jemisin a Green Lantern premise centered on a single Lantern posted alone in a remote sector of space; Jemisin later recalled that the world of the City Enduring took shape in her imagination almost immediately after hearing the idea. Jemisin made a deliberate publishing choice to release the series as a monthly floppy rather than a Black Label original graphic novel, reasoning that a Green Lantern character needed the continuity legitimacy of the periodical format to be accepted by readers as a "real" Lantern — a calculated creative-business decision that paid off. Artist Jamal Campbell, fresh off co-creating Naomi for DC, handled pencils, inks, colors, and the main cover, making him one of the primary visual architects of the series' distinctive aesthetic; variant covers for issue #1 were supplied by Shawn Martinbrough and Jamie McKelvie. The issue shipped on November 13, 2019, with a January 2020 cover date, and sold out its first print run quickly enough to warrant a second printing announced in early January 2020, featuring a recolored version of Campbell's original cover.
