In the quiet darkness of Cité des Hortensias, two police officers arrive at the door of Madame de Ségur’s apartment after an anonymous tip about a gunshot. Inside, the Comtesse lies unconscious on her sofa, blood on her face. Beside her, in a nearby armchair, Jérôme K. stirs—dazed, disoriented, an unexplained weapon in his hand. As the door bursts open, he leaps through the window and vanishes into the night.
