1936 reser den 19:e Fantomen med ett fartyg från USA till Europa. Fartyget förliser vid Orkneyöarna och de överlevande spolas upp på Blacksay, en ö som sägs vara förbannad och även rymma en vikingaskatt. Snart börjar folk att dö på grund av underliggande konflikter och girighet. När de finner skatten och vikingakungen Haralds grav är det bara Fantomen, Svein Asleifsson och läkaren Douglas McQuade kvar. Svein säger sig vara en viking som överlevt i tusen år och seglar iväg med Haralds skepp och lik.
