Shejk Maroof vill återbärda det legendariska svärdet Durandal till den franska familjen de Cambrai, men greve Stefan de Cambrai och hans syster Angelique tas till fånga av singpiraterna. Den 13:e Fantomen och hans vägvisare Syed Asraf befriar först Angelique från ett harem i ett piratnäste. De får veta att greven anslutit sig till singpiraterna och det blir en hård kamp innan shejken och greven offrar sina liv för att rädda vännerna och svärdet. Durandal hänger sedan dess i Dödskallegrottans skattkammare.
