In "Countdown: Abominio," scientist Phil Stearns sets a deadly trap for janitor Bruce Banner, unaware that the man he's targeting will soon become the Hulk. When Abomination arrives at a nuclear testing facility and confronts Banner, a surge of gamma radiation transforms the janitor into the Hulk during daylight—turning a simple confrontation into a volatile clash. The Hulk's sudden appearance throws off Abomination's plans, but the battle takes a grim turn as the poison Stearns implanted begins to take effect.

In "Countdown: Fantastici Quattro," the Hulk travels to Phoenix seeking help from Reed Richards to understand his worsening condition, only to be attacked by Ms. Marvel—mistaken by him for a corrupted Thing. Meanwhile, Doc Samson tracks the Hulk to Yucca Flats, where a tense confrontation unfolds. As tests reveal the truth, Reed delivers a grim prognosis: the radiation poisoning in the Hulk’s body will prove fatal when he reverts to Bruce Banner at sunrise.
