Fantastic #8
☆ Be the first to review + Add to your collection — Join freeThis anthology issue contains three stories: "The Thinking Machine," in which a narrator visits Professor Philo's strange house on an island and encounters a thinking machine with a crystalline rhythm that comes to life; "Brant Craig," featuring the fast-talking private detective investigating a murder at Saturn's Grellama Derby sporting event, where he and his date Twinkle Starr become entangled in "The Case of the Racing Grellama"; and a third untitled story about a boy who encounters a mysterious creature near ice cliffs and later persuades his reluctant mother to visit the location, though she warns him of something peculiar about the area.
Captain Science crashes onto an uncharted Pacific island overrun with prehistoric monsters and discovers it's actually the domain of the deranged Professor Drago, a mad scientist who's populated his isolated fortress with dangerous creatures and holds prisoners captive. Now trapped on the Isle of Madness alongside other castaways, Captain Science must use his wits and whatever tech remains to outwit Drago's monstrous "pets" and escape before the professor makes good on his threat.
A magazine writer visits Professor Philo's isolated laboratory to discuss his theories on crystalline intelligence, only to discover the professor has built something far more disturbing—a thinking machine that may be beyond his control. When a storm forces the writer to return to the house, he stumbles upon a forbidden room where the professor and his creation are locked in a deadly struggle that will change everything he thought he knew about the nature of thought itself.
Brant Craig, Saturn's smoothest private detective, shows up at the planet's biggest sporting event—the Grellama Derby—ready for a relaxing afternoon with his date and a winning bet, until a trainer turns up dead in the stables and the case refuses to leave him alone. When the stolen racing dog and a dangerous conspiracy pull Brant back into the mystery, he finds himself racing through space and dodging death rays to uncover who's really behind the murder and the missing Grellama.
