Cherry had been employed as Penny's nursemaid after the girl's parents had separated when Penny was only a few months old. When Penny's mother died, her father returns from Kenya to take his daughter back to live on his farm with him. He asks Cherry to come with them to look after Penny and she agrees. At Kyoba farm, the father dies in an accident while cleaning his gun and everyone is surprised to discover that he had left the farm to Cherry in his will.
