Exceptional X-Men #4
☆ Be the first to review + Add to your collection — Join freeExceptional X-Men #4 is the issue that fully integrates Bobby Drake — Iceman, one of Marvel's original five X-Men — into the post-Krakoa Chicago lineup built around Kitty Pryde and Emma Frost, deepening the generational dynamic at the heart of writer Eve L. Ewing's 'From the Ashes' vision. The issue gives Bronze (Trista Marshall) her first extended solo spotlight, sending the newly code-named young mutant through a gauntlet of real teenage anxiety — a school-play audition, a crush, and an actual interdimensional creature — that distills the classic X-Men metaphor for young readers in a grounded, contemporary Chicago setting. It also surfaces ongoing post-Krakoa tension between Kitty and Bobby when Kitty discovers he has been in secret contact with Rogue, threading a quieter interpersonal thread through what is otherwise the series' most action-forward issue to date.

Exceptional X-Men is one of three core flagship titles announced in March 2024 at SXSW as part of Marvel's 'X-Men: From the Ashes' initiative, which relaunched the entire X-Men publishing line in the wake of the Krakoan Age's conclusion. The series was conceived by writer Eve L. Ewing — a sociologist, poet, and prior Marvel writer on Ironheart and Champions — and Spanish artist Carmen Carnero, a Marvel Stormbreaker whose previous credits include Captain Marvel, X-Men Red, and Captain America: Sentinel of Liberty; Carnero has spoken publicly about how clearly Ewing defined each new character's personality, hobbies, and emotional world from the earliest scripts, which made the character design process feel 'natural' for the whole team. Issue #4, released digitally and in print on December 25, 2024 (with a February 2025 cover date), had been teased since the series' launch trailer in September 2024, which specifically flagged Iceman's arrival in December as a major cast addition.
Trivia · 8 facts
- Released December 25, 2024 (cover-dated February 2025); written by Eve L. Ewing, art by Carmen Carnero, colors by Nolan Woodard, letters by Travis Lanham, cover by Carmen Carnero.
- Iceman (Bobby Drake) joins the Chicago team in this issue, his arrival having been teased in Marvel's official series trailer released at the time of Exceptional X-Men #1's September 2024 launch.
- Bronze (Trista Marshall) faces her first solo battle in this issue — defeating an interdimensional creature that crashes her school audition — a key character-building milestone for one of Marvel's newest mutants.
- Emma Frost uses a psionically-projected Sentinel as a combat training tool (a stand-in for a Danger Room the team lacks), confirming the makeshift, resourceful nature of this post-Krakoa X-Men training operation.
- A subplot reveals that Bobby Drake has been in secret contact with Rogue, provoking a confrontation with Kitty Pryde about her returning to full X-Men duty — escalating the series' post-Krakoa political tensions.
- The issue carries five variant covers: a standard Carmen Carnero cover, a 1:25 Aka variant, a 1:50 David Baldeón Melee Virgin variant, a Chris Campana Iceman variant, and a Marguerite Sauvage Winter Holiday variant.
- An interdimensional monster from X-Force (Vol. 7) #5 makes a crossover appearance, annotated with an editorial note — a deliberate connectivity thread between the 'From the Ashes' titles.
- Issue #4 is collected in Exceptional X-Men by Eve L. Ewing Vol. 1: Duty Calls (ISBN 9781302959395), which gathers issues #1–5 of the series.
