A young woman writes to advice columnist Nora Lane about her engagement to a man with a criminal past. The man, reformed after time in reform school and prison, has built a successful furniture business, but Jean's parents oppose the marriage because of his history with a gang and a robbery he committed years ago. A doctor tells Jean that her fiancé's past will cause her unhappiness and death, placing a curse on their union. Despite this dark prophecy, Jean marries her fiancé, but tragedy strikes when his mother dies and he falls into despair, ultimately leading to Jean's own death, leaving their child bereft.
