By anchoring its timeline to the classic 1980s X-Men roster — uniforms and all — the issue functions as an in-continuity expansion of the Hellfire Club's internal politics, a corner of the X-Men mythology that, outside of the Krakoan-era Marauders, had historically stayed on the margins of dedicated storytelling. The series was announced in March 2025, with writer Amy Chu — known for Red Sonja and Poison Ivy: Cycle of Life and Death — expressing a long-held ambition to write 'bad' Emma Frost specifically in her pre-diamond-mutation, pre-heroic incarnation. Artist Andrea Di Vito, whose prior Marvel work included Deadpool and Invincible Iron Man, was tapped to illustrate; in pre-release interviews he described the assignment as a chance to depict Emma 'in her raw form,' and notably populated the debut issue with an unusually dense cast — Chu joked in press that Di Vito had drawn 353 people in the first issue alone without being asked. The creative team also included colorist Antonio Fabela, letterer VC's Ariana Maher, and editor Martin Biro, with executive editor Tom Brevoort overseeing the project. The cover for the main edition was painted by David Nakayama, with a wide variant program at launch including covers by Joëlle Jones, Greg Land, Joshua 'Sway' Swaby, Rickie Yagawa, and Dan Panosian.
