Ellery Queen investigates the murder of a girl named Miss Murray, who is found stabbed to death in a secluded area. Inspector Richard Queen, Ellery's father, informs him that a criminal named Chuck Drake broke out of Yolanda Penitentiary and was with the victim at the time of her death. Ellery pursues Drake through the railroad yards and countryside, eventually cornering him with police assistance. The story concludes with Drake's capture and the resolution of the Murray girl's murder case.
