By 1996, Warp Graphics had been running as many as seven parallel Elfquest titles simultaneously; Richard Pini announced that consolidating all storylines into one monthly anthology was both an editorial simplification and a market response. The anthology ran for 33 issues (1996–1999) before Richard Pini ended monthly publication, citing a long-term assessment of the direct-market landscape and a desire to shift resources toward the Reader's Collection book-format reprints. Issue #21 fell mid-run, during a period when the 'Wolfrider!' segments — written and drawn primarily by Wendy Pini — were appearing in every other issue (issues 19, 21, 23, 25, 27) alongside contributions from a rotating roster of freelance writers and artists brought in during the anthology era.
