About this Issue

Edge of Spider-Verse (2022) #1 opens the second volume of Marvel's anthology series designed to onboard readers into the End of the Spider-Verse event, functioning as the direct creative heir to the 2014 series that introduced Spider-Gwen and Peni Parker to the world. The issue delivers two confirmed first appearances — Spider-Laird (Donald MacGargan of Earth-1740, an 18th-century Scottish spider-totem) and Spider-Rex (Pter Ptarker of Earth-66, a dinosaur origin-story parody) — both of whom went on to play roles in the larger End of the Spider-Verse storyline and its sequel anthology Bleeding Edge. It also restores Anya Corazon to her Araña identity with a redesigned costume, repositioning a long-underutilized character as a central player in the Spider-Army. Editorially, the issue marks Dan Slott's return to Spider-Verse mythology — the franchise he helped build — now framed as its intended conclusion.

History

In May 2022, Marvel announced that Dan Slott would helm what the publisher billed as the final Spider-Verse story, End of the Spider-Verse. The five-issue anthology miniseries Edge of Spider-Verse launched in August 2022 as its lead-in, structured around multiple creative teams contributing self-contained stories per issue, with Slott writing an overarching connective narrative across the run. Issue #1 shipped August 3, 2022, with stories by Dan Slott (art: Martin Coccolo), Alex Segura (art: Caio Majado), Karla Pacheco (art: Pere Pérez), and Dustin Weaver with D.J. Bryant; cover art was provided by Josemaria Casanovas.

Trivia · 8 facts

  • First appearance of Spider-Laird (Donald MacGargan, Earth-1740), an 18th-century Scottish spider-totem introduced in 'Something Wicked This Way Comes' by Dan Slott and Martin Coccolo.
  • First appearance of Spider-Rex (Pter Ptarker, Earth-66), a prehistoric Pteranodon-turned-spider-hero, debuting in 'Spider-Rex!!' by Karla Pacheco and Pere Pérez; the story also introduces his dinosaur analogs Uncle Bten and Aunpt May.
  • Anya Corazon formally reclaims the Araña identity in 'The Hero Within' (Alex Segura, Caio Majado), complete with a new costume design by Humberto Ramos, as Madame Web (Julia Carpenter) warns her that the Sisterhood of the Wasp has returned.
  • The Spider-Man Noir story ('My Dame…My Destiny' by Dustin Weaver and D.J. Bryant) is set on Earth-90214 and introduces Sharon Keller, a mystery woman who transforms into a giant wasp and attacks Peter B. Parker.
  • Zarina Zahari (Spider-UK, Earth-834) appears in this issue, establishing her as a key member of the emerging Spider-Army alongside Araña and Madame Web.
  • The issue is an anthology of four distinct stories, each by a separate creative team, with Slott's Spider-Laird segment serving as the overarching narrative thread that will run through all five issues of the miniseries.
  • The series was designed as the preamble to the End of the Spider-Verse, which launched in October 2022 with the adjectiveless Spider-Man ongoing by Dan Slott and Mark Bagley.
  • Characters and concepts introduced across this anthology miniseries proved popular enough that Marvel launched a follow-up volume, Edge of Spider-Verse: Bleeding Edge, focusing on Spider-Rex, Spinstress, Spider-Boy, and other new variants introduced during End of the Spider-Verse.
