Eddie Stanky, homesick and broke after leaving the Giants, writes home to his mother asking for train fare back. Inspired by a letter from his mother encouraging him to pursue baseball, he commits himself to reaching the major leagues and heads to the ballpark. In spring 1943, Stanky joins the Chicago Cubs and plays in several games, including a game against Cleveland where he makes aggressive plays at second base despite being tagged roughly by opposing runners. After struggling with the Cubs and briefly playing in Philadelphia, Stanky is brought to the Cleveland Indians, where he demonstrates his grit by making critical plays—including belting a tie-breaking run in the ninth inning of a crucial series game against the Braves—helping the Indians secure victory.
