BOOM! Studios announced the Dune: House Harkonnen series in January 2023, with issue #1 shipping January 18, 2023; that debut issue sold out at the distributor level and required a second printing before issue #3 even reached shelves. The series was scripted by Brian Herbert — son of Frank Herbert and co-author of the original prose novel — alongside Kevin J. Anderson, the same creative duo who wrote the source novel around the turn of the millennium; they adapted their own work for the page rather than handing it to a third-party scripter, a relatively unusual arrangement that gave the comic direct authorial continuity with the novels. Artist Michael Shelfer (previously of Domino) handled interiors throughout the run, with colorist Patricio Delpeche and letterer Ed Dukeshire rounding out the production team, while Raymond Swanland provided the main cover and variant covers for issue #3.
