☆ Be the first to review + Add to your collection — Join freeDune: House Harkonnen #1 marks the first-ever comic book adaptation of the second novel in Brian Herbert and Kevin J. Anderson's 'Prelude to Dune' trilogy, bringing to sequential art a prequel story that had only existed in prose since 2000. As the direct follow-up to BOOM! Studios' successful Dune: House Atreides adaptation, it deepened the publisher's commitment to visualizing the full arc of Harkonnen scheming that feeds directly into Frank Herbert's original 1965 masterpiece. The issue opened a twelve-part series that gives readers their first illustrated look at the formative years of figures like Gurney Halleck, Lady Jessica, and Liet Kynes as their destinies begin to be shaped by Baron Harkonnen's wide-ranging plots against House Atreides, the Bene Gesserit, and the Emperor himself. Its rapid sell-through at the distributor level demonstrated that the Dune comics line had developed a committed audience capable of sustaining the full 'Prelude to Dune' trilogy in comic form.

The series was announced in late 2022 by BOOM! Studios, with Brian Herbert and Kevin J. Anderson personally scripting the adaptation of their own New York Times-bestselling novel — the same collaborative approach they used for the Dune: House Atreides adaptation that preceded it. Artist Michael Shelfer (known for work on Domino) joined colorist Patricio Delpeche and letterer Ed Dukeshire to form the core creative team. By the time of the announcement, Herbert and Anderson had already delivered the first six scripts to the publisher, signaling a well-developed production pipeline. The issue shipped January 18, 2023, and sold out at the distributor level quickly enough that BOOM! announced a second printing — featuring new cover art by Shelfer with colorist Dan Jackson — available February 15, 2023.
