Collecting Garry Trudeau's earliest work from his Yale years, this 1976 paperback is a charming time capsule of Doonesbury at its very beginning. The cover sets the tone perfectly: three distinctly rendered characters — a football player in helmet, a bespectacled fellow in yellow, and a curly-haired companion with a cigarette — sit around a cluttered table beneath framed pictures and a blue oar, looking equal parts weary and sardonic. With a foreword by Erich Segal and every line drawn by Trudeau himself, it's a wonderful gathering of the strip's collegiate roots.
