When U.S. forces meet unexpected resistance at Bonape, Admiral Colby turns to Commander Don Winslow—a troubleshooter training in Australia with the Navy's new two-man submarine. Don and his partner Red are tasked with penetrating the heavily mined waters around the island to clear a path for the invasion fleet, but reaching their objective means navigating past Japanese destroyers, depth charges, and defenses protecting the enemy's biggest battleship and aircraft carrier. It's a race against time, and one wrong move could doom both the submarine crew and the entire operation.

When Jetsam Joe hires a bargain-basement helper on the recommendation of Eaglebeak Spruder, he gets far more than he bargained for—literally finding a sign-bearer named Charles Dickens instead of the worker he expected. Tom McNamara's half-page romp plays the mix-up for quick laughs as Joe and his new "assistant" quickly discover they're anything but on the same wavelength.

Don Winslow and Red Pennington volunteer for a desperate infiltration mission on the heavily fortified island of Wemak, despite Don nursing a broken arm—their goal is to locate and expose the Japanese machine gun positions that have been decimating the Marine assault forces. Using quick thinking and some rigged unmanned weapons, the pair work to turn the tide of battle, but discovery leads them into enemy hands and a fight for survival deep in a Japanese stronghold.

When a dynamite-laden transport plane circles blindly above a Newfoundland airfield with all its lights mysteriously sabotaged, Don Winslow and Red must act fast to prevent disaster—and uncover who among the base personnel is working with enemy agents. As Don devises an ingenious rescue and a trap to flush out the saboteurs, he discovers the whole operation is connected to a U-boat lurking offshore with sinister plans of its own.
