The Dog Man character traces its origins to Dav Pilkey's own childhood: diagnosed with ADHD and dyslexia, a young Pilkey was sent to sit in his school hallway for disruptive behavior, where he channeled his energy into creating homemade comics — the very earliest adventures of Dog Man and Captain Underpants. The character later appeared in embryonic form within the Captain Underpants universe, with 'The Adventures of Dog Man' first embedded as a comic-within-a-comic in Captain Underpants and the Terrifying Return of Tippy Tinkletrousers (2012), before Pilkey and Scholastic elevated it to a standalone series in 2016. Originally, the first book was conceived as the fourth entry in Pilkey's 'Graphic Novels by George and Harold' Treehouse Comix subline (which had housed the Super Diaper Baby and Ook and Gluk books), but Pilkey ultimately separated Dog Man into its own dedicated franchise — a structural decision that opened the door to the expansive multi-volume series that followed.
