About this Collection

Doctor Who: The Eleventh Doctor #1 marks the debut of Titan Comics' tenure as the BBC's new licensed Doctor Who publisher, replacing IDW Publishing after its run ended in 2013 — a meaningful torch-passing in the history of the property's American comic presence. The issue introduces Alice Obiefune, a grieving, middle-aged Black British woman, as the Eleventh Doctor's first original ongoing comics companion, making her a genuinely distinctive addition to the Doctor Who expanded universe: older than the typical companion and carrying a weight of personal loss that shaped the entire Year One arc. Together with the eventual arrivals of shape-shifting alien ARC and rock musician Jones — a thinly veiled David Bowie analogue — this first issue seeded one of the most creatively ambitious companion lineups the Doctor had ever had outside of television. The series also demonstrated that a new generation of 2000 AD-trained British writers could translate the register of the Matt Smith era faithfully to the page without the budget constraints of television.

The Doctor (Eleventh Doctor)

In "Chapter 1: After Life," a grieving Alice Obiefune finds unexpected purpose when the Eleventh Doctor enlists her help tracking a mysterious alien creature—what he calls a "dog," though it's far from ordinary. As she joins the chase, the rhythm of the adventure offers her fleeting joy, a momentary lift from her sorrow, though the weight of her past remains. Drawn by the thrill and the chance to escape her own mind, Alice makes the choice to step into the TARDIS and keep moving forward.

History

Titan Publishing Group was announced as the new Doctor Who comics licensee in January 2014, winning out over rival publishers after IDW's contract expired, and promptly recruited co-writers Al Ewing (then writing Loki: Agent of Asgard for Marvel) and Rob Williams, both veterans of 2000 AD — Titan approached them specifically because of the collaborative co-writing method they had demonstrated on Judge Dredd: Trifecta with Si Spurrier. Artist Simon Fraser, also a 2000 AD alumnus known for Nikolai Dante, drew the interiors, while the regular Cover A was provided by fan-artist-turned-official-illustrator Alice X. Zhang, who adapted a Matt Smith portrait she had originally released as personal fan art into what became one of the most recognizable covers of Titan's entire Doctor Who line. The issue launched simultaneously with Doctor Who: The Tenth Doctor #1 on July 23, 2014, and a Doctor Who Comic Day promotional event was held three days later to celebrate both launches.

Trivia · 8 facts

  • First appearance of Alice Obiefune, the Eleventh Doctor's primary companion throughout Titan's entire Eleventh Doctor run — an unemployed, grieving Black British librarian in her forties, a deliberately atypical companion profile.
  • Written by series co-architects Al Ewing and Rob Williams; interior art by Simon Fraser; colors by Gary Caldwell; lettering by Comicraft — all confirmed in solicitation and GCD records.
  • Cover A (regular) by Alice X. Zhang, adapted from fan art she had previously released online, which had already been licensed as official BBC Doctor Who poster art.
  • On sale July 23, 2014 — launched simultaneously with Doctor Who: The Tenth Doctor #1 as part of Titan's debut slate, with a Doctor Who Comic Day promotional event held July 26, 2014.
  • Represents the Eleventh Doctor's first dedicated ongoing comic series since the IDW-published Doctor Who (2012 series), and the first under Titan Comics following their January 2014 acquisition of the BBC license from IDW.
  • Story title 'After Life'; set in the narrative gap between the TV episodes 'A Christmas Carol' and 'The Impossible Astronaut,' filling in adventures that take place while Amy and Rory are on their honeymoon.
  • The issue debuted with a significant number of retailer-exclusive variant covers, including San Diego Comic Con, Forbidden Planet, and Alien Entertainment photo-cover variants; a cover gallery of all variants was printed inside issue #2.
  • Collected in Doctor Who: The Eleventh Doctor – Year One Vol. 1: After Life (issues #1–5); the complete Year One was also later published in a single hardback omnibus.
