The series was editorially conceived around a single directive from editor Alanna Smith: relocate Doctor Strange to Asgard in the wake of the One World Under Doom event, in which Doom had stripped Strange of the Sorcerer Supreme title. Writer Derek Landy — an Irish novelist best known for his Skulduggery Pleasant books and prior Marvel work on Infinity Watch — was brought on board alongside artist Carlos Magno, who had most recently drawn Captain America. Landy has described the assignment as daunting precisely because it followed several well-regarded runs, and credited Smith's instruction to move the character to an entirely new setting as the creative unlock that made the project viable. Cover artist Geoff Shaw also contributed character design work for Strange's new Asgardian-inspired costume, which debuted across the series.
