About this Issue

Doctor Strange (Vol. 8) #2 marks the first appearance of Gallipheron, a new addition to the Asgardian supporting cast created by Derek Landy and Ivan Fiorelli for their ongoing redefinition of Strange's corner of the Marvel Universe. The issue also delivers a major plot turning point — the death of Regent Idyl of Heven — which reshapes the political landscape of the Ten Realms arc and raises the stakes of Vyrbodin's scheme from a local Alfheim dispute into a Nine Realms crisis. As the second chapter of the eighth solo volume of the Doctor Strange title, it represents one piece of a sustained creative effort to anchor the Sorcerer Supreme firmly within the Asgardian cosmology rather than his traditional Earth-bound mystic milieu.

History

This series launched in December 2025 as a direct continuation of Landy's earlier Doctor Strange of Asgard miniseries and flows out of events established in Jason Aaron's Immortal Thor run — specifically Loki's murder of Thor, which sealed Midgard off from the other Nine Realms and left Strange stranded as Asgard's Sorcerer Supreme. Marvel announced the ongoing in August 2025, with Comics Beat reporting that Landy and Fiorelli were reunited from their prior work together. Fiorelli noted in Marvel's own press materials that designing entirely new characters for permanent entry into the Marvel Universe was a central ambition of the collaboration.
