Doc Savage #4

Marvel's 1976 magazine-format run of Doc Savage delivers a novel-length thriller in issue #4, promising "Ghost-Pirates from the Beyond!" on a cover painted by Ken Barr that's hard to look away from. The Man of Bronze dominates the foreground — shirt torn, muscles tensed — while masked, weapon-brandishing pirates loom out of the eerie darkness behind him and a ball of fire erupts in the background. It's a moody, atmospheric image that captures Doug Moench's story and the interior art by Tony DeZuniga and Marie Severin at their pulp-adventure best.
