Der Maurer Geron tötet Ritter Godfrey um das Dorfmädchen Babette vor einer Vergewaltigung zu retten und wird gefangen genommen. Da seine Schuld nicht bewiesen ist, wird ihm als "Gottesurteil" eine Hand verbrüht. Aymar von Bos-Maury setzt sich für ihn ein und wird zu einem Duell gezwungen bei dem er siegt. Geron kommt frei, kann aber sein Handwerk nicht mehr ausüben. Er hält sich mit Mundraub und Gelegenheitsarbeiten über Wasser und schließt sich einer Gruppe von fahrender Spielleuten an.
