In the seventeenth chapter of Finix Comics' long-running frontier series, Die Pioniere der Neuen Welt ventures "Im Lande der Illinois" — into the territory of the Illinois people. Ersel's cover draws the eye immediately to a weathered Indigenous elder in the foreground, his roached hair and painted features rendered with striking detail, while behind him a tense scene unfolds near a wooden palisade fort, with figures on horseback and feathered staffs planted in the earth. Writers Maryse Charles and Jean-François Charles continue their richly researched portrayal of early North American frontier life, and this 2010 German-language edition from Finix is a handsome entry point into one of European comics' most thoughtfully crafted historical adventures.
