“Die Feuertaufe”

In the early days of a brutal civil war, young Cornelius Chesterfield, a reluctant butcher’s apprentice, enlists in the army to escape an arranged wedding—while Blutch, the saloon owner, drunkenly signs up against his will. "Die Feuertaufe" sets the stage for a simmering resentment between the two, as Chesterfield’s forced enlistment and Blutch’s regret set the tone for a story where loyalty and survival hang in the balance. Written by Raoul Cauvin and Harald Sachse, with art and inks by Willy Lambil, and a cover by Willy Lambil, this 1989 issue from Carlsen Comics captures the tension of a world on fire—both literally and in spirit.
