In "The Case of the Son of Flattop," Flattop Jr. makes a sudden move to free Joe Period, leaving Lizz behind in the brine barrel. With the police closing in, the two flee in Flattop Jr.'s bizarrely equipped car—complete with a refrigerator, TV, and hot plate—racing off-road after cutting through a wire fence. Dick Tracy, spotting the break in the fence, quickly sets up a roadblock to intercept them.
In "Red Hot Trail!" from Dick Tracy #129 (1958), Flattop Jr. and Joe Period slip through the net by fleeing across open fields and hiding in a trailer camp, unaware their careless use of a TV and coffee pot has drained their getaway car’s battery. When they replace it, the camp attendant’s alert to Tracy sets a trap in motion, and the detective, along with Sam, moves in to close the net.
