A young woman named Hope runs away from her middle-class home seeking excitement and meets Dave Markham at a roadhouse where a brawl occurs and she gives her name to police. Hope is subsequently arrested and faces expulsion from school, but Dave insists on keeping their romance secret. After a courtroom scene where Hope signs a statement, she collapses and is hospitalized; Dave visits her and they reconcile, with Hope deciding to build a life with him rather than pursue the thrilling but dangerous romance she once craved. The story concludes with Hope and Ted (Dave's friend) together, as Hope reflects on finding genuine happiness and loyal companionship with Ted as they look forward to college and a shared future.
