Diary Loves #7

A young woman in a bold red plaid shirt sits relaxed against a moody blue backdrop, cradling a delicate dried wildflower stem in her folded hands and offering the viewer a knowing, gentle smile. With 52 big full-width pages for just a dime, this September 1950 issue — including the evocatively titled story "I Took the Wrong Road" — is a charming snapshot of postwar romance comics at their most heartfelt.

Abbie and her grandfather run an isolated desert gas station. Hiker Bart arrives and stays to help out. He and Abbie fall in love. The police arrive, in search of an escape convict, but Bart has fled. Tracked down in the desert, Bart admits he’s a fugitive, but from his rich father, not the police. He was being forced into a career and marriage he didn’t want. Bart’s father agrees to let Bart live his own life, which includes marrying Abbie.
