“My Foolish Pride”

In "My Foolish Pride," bank teller Grace faces a quiet crisis when her mother’s stroke forces her to choose between pride and survival. Refusing charity from the very people who could help, she takes a job as a waitress—only to find that compassion isn’t always what it seems. With heartfelt storytelling and expressive art by Leo Morey, this 1952 gem captures a moment of dignity, resilience, and unexpected connection.

Bank teller Grace, who supports her mother and two young brothers on her salary, accepts a date from wealthy Reid. Grace breaks off their relationship and quits her job after her mother suffers a stroke. Grace refuses to have her mother become a charity patient at the “welfare hospital.” She also turns down gifts from the local woman’s group chaired by Reid’s mother. Grace later gets a job as a waitress in a diner and runs into Reid. Reid’s mother says her group doesn’t offer charity, just a helping hand from “neighbors.” Reid and Grace reconcile.
