Devil Kids Starring Hot Stuff #1

The issue introduces Zooky, a fairy-princess character who would become a recurring fixture in Hot Stuff's world, expanding the cast of what was already Harvey's most self-contained supernatural universe. As the third ongoing title to star Hot Stuff (following his self-titled solo book in 1957 and Hot Stuff Sizzlers in 1960), Devil Kids demonstrated Harvey's confidence that their little red devil could anchor a parallel ongoing series running simultaneously with his flagship title. It also cemented the creative template — Hot Stuff short-form gag stories paired with Stumbo the Giant backup features — that would define the Harvey anthology format through the 1960s and 1970s.

Hot Stuff the Little Devil was created entirely by Warren Kremer, who launched the character directly into his own solo title in October 1957 without the trial run in the Harvey Hits tryout anthology that most Harvey characters required — a mark of the publisher's early confidence in the concept. Kremer, who served as art editor at Harvey for 35 years and is credited with creating or co-creating Richie Rich, Stumbo the Giant, and the modern visual identity of Casper the Friendly Ghost, drew the cover art for Devil Kids #1 and contributed interior stories as well. The series was published under the editorial stewardship of Alfred Harvey and editor Sid Jacobson, who had hired Kremer back in 1948 specifically to bring animation-influenced draftsmanship to Harvey's comics line.
