Two young women recline amid a surreal menagerie of creatures — a leopard, a small frog, reptilian forms, and a zebra-striped animal among them — while one casually levels a handgun, the whole scene rendered in Daisuke Igarashi's characteristically delicate, watercolor-tinged linework. That tension between the serene and the unsettling is exactly what makes Designs so compelling from its very first volume. Igarashi's intricate naturalism and quietly strange atmosphere are on full display here, promising readers something genuinely unlike anything else on the shelf.
