“Rock, Paper, Sisters”

Vertigo's mature-readers run of Deadman reaches its tenth issue with a cover by John Watkiss that commands attention — a brooding, close-cropped face dominates the image, wire-rimmed glasses catching the light while fragmented, doll-like figure pieces scatter outward in an eerie burst. The disjointed limbs and featureless blue forms floating against that warm, oxidized background give the whole composition a deeply unsettling, surreal quality that fits perfectly within Vertigo's 2007 sensibility. Bruce Jones and Watkiss continue their collaboration here with "Rock, Paper, Sisters," and this cover alone suggests the series remains as strange and compelling as ever.
