About this Issue

Deadly Neighborhood Spider-Man #1 marks the first appearance of Crystal Catawnee, a Sioux-descended scientist who becomes Peter Parker's research partner in Los Angeles and ultimately transforms into the new hero Dream-Spider by the series' conclusion — the first Spider-themed legacy character to emerge directly from a creative partnership rooted in Indigenous storytelling. The issue is also notable for transplanting an iconic X-Men villain — the Demon Bear, the supernatural entity that defined the New Mutants' Demon Bear Saga of New Mutants #18–20 (1984) — into Spider-Man's corner of the Marvel Universe for the first time, a cross-franchise horror crossover with real genre ambition. Creatively, the series represents writer Taboo's (of the Black Eyed Peas) continued effort to weave Native American mythology and perspectives into mainstream Marvel characters, following his earlier Werewolf by Night miniseries, now applied to Marvel's most prominent hero.

History

The series was written by Taboo (Jaime Gomez of the Black Eyed Peas) and co-writer B. Earl, with interior art and colors by Juan Ferreyra and a main cover by Rahzzah; it was edited by Lindsey Cohick and Nick Lowe under Editor-in-Chief C.B. Cebulski. Taboo and Earl had previously collaborated on a Native-lens Werewolf by Night miniseries before being handed Spider-Man, and they explicitly continued their practice of centering Indigenous characters and Ojibwe/Sioux-rooted mythology within a mainstream Marvel title. The issue shipped October 19, 2022 with a notable production footnote: artist Bengal's connecting variant cover originally included Spinnerette, a character from an independent webcomic, because Bengal confused her with Marvel's own Spinneret (Mary Jane Watson from Renew Your Vows); upon being informed of the error, Bengal was required to correct the cover before print.
