Dead Boy Detectives #8
Vertigo's supernatural mystery series — spun out from the pages of The Sandman — reaches its eighth issue with a deeply unsettling cover by Mark Buckingham: three ghostly, wide-eyed faces loom enormous around a snow-battered windmill, while two small figures shelter in its doorway below. The stark contrast between those looming, otherworldly visages and the tiny human figures caught in the blizzard gives the whole image an eerie, fairy-tale dread that suits "Ghost Snow Part Two of Five: Twirls" perfectly. With Toby Litt and Buckingham co-writing and Lee Loughridge's moody palette tying it all together, this 2014 chapter of the Dead Boy Detectives looks like a genuinely haunting read.
