Set against the brooding backdrop of a darkened Renaissance manor, this opening volume of De Vorsers introduces two compelling figures — a dark-haired young woman conjuring glowing orbs of light and a cloaked young man clutching mysterious objects — against a twilight atmosphere thick with alchemical symbolism. The subtitle "Ferraris, 1512 — Van lood naar goud" ("From lead to gold") sets the stage for a story steeped in the arcane world of early sixteenth-century alchemy. Stefano Carloni's artwork, beautifully rendered in rich jewel tones by colorist Isambert Franck, makes this 2017 Belgian release an immediately arresting start to the series.
