“Not Fit for Love”

A winter 1950 snapshot of postwar romance comics at their most emotionally charged, this issue of Darling Romance promises "Real Stories of True Love" for just a dime. The cover pulls no punches: an older man looms menacingly over a young woman and her suitor, speech bubbles crackling with desperate pleas — "Stop, Mr. Blair… leave her alone! We're going to be married!" and "No, Dad… don't hit me! Please!" — while a haunting caption teases the featured story, "Not Fit for Love," hinting at a hidden past that threatens to shatter happiness forever. It's the kind of raw, heartfelt melodrama that made Archie's romance line so compelling in 1950.

Bonnie’s parents are very strict, so she sneaks out to date Bill. He proposes marriage; when Bonnie’s parents find out, they beat her. Her “father” says he is really her uncle: her real father was a murderer and her “mother was a--well, no better!” They fear Bonnie has “bad blood.” Bonnie breaks up with Bill. Bill brings Professor Sternberg, “head of the psychiatric department at State University,” to tell Bonnie “your fears are absolutely groundless! There is no such thing as ‘bad blood’…crime…is caused by environment…” Bonnie’s adoptive parents apologize and Bonnie can now marry Bill.
