Abby’s mother raises her daughter to become a star as a way to escape poverty. Abby goes along with the program, but she doesn’t dislike the residents of their slum neighborhood as her mother does. Abby falls in love with bus driver Jed. Abby’s mother insists Abby accept a role in a musical and Jed breaks up with her. Abby is a success but hates her life; she runs away. Her mother tracks her down and compels her to return to the stage, but Abby breaks her ankle and can no longer perform. Abby and Jed are reunited and Abby’s mother apologizes for her dominating ways.
