“I Was Jilted!”

Few romance comics open with an image quite this striking: a bride in full wedding regalia — veil, tiara, pearl necklace — reads a note bearing the gut-punch message "Sorry, Cannot Marry You. Forgive Me. Bob." The cover perfectly sets the emotional stage for a 52-page anthology promising titles like "I Was Jilted," "Two Loves Have I," and "I Lied for Love" — all the heartache and longing that made 1949 romance comics irresistible. Archie's Darling Love announces itself right out of the gate as a title unafraid to look romance's messier moments squarely in the eye.

Aspiring actress Ellen meets art student Dean and they fall in love. Dean’s older brother Steve runs the family ranch in Colorado. Steve demands Dean drop his studies and help run the ranch, and calls Ellen a gold-digger. Dean and Ellen marry anyway but Dean’s injured in an accident and left a bitter invalid.
