Daredevil: Cold Day in Hell #2

History

Charles Soule revealed in a 2025 Marvel.com interview that he first conceived this story in the spring of 2018—before his original 2015 'Daredevil' run had even concluded—meaning the project gestated for roughly seven years before reaching print. Rather than working from a traditional full script, Soule and artist Steve McNiven used a deeply collaborative, plot-first approach: Soule produced a broad plot document incorporating their shared conversations, McNiven drew from that latitude, and Soule returned afterward to layer in dialogue and sound effects—a process McNiven likened to 'jazz.' The two had previously co-created 'Death of Wolverine' (2014) and 'Star Wars: War of the Bounty Hunters' (2021), and both described 'Cold Day in Hell' as their most ambitious collaboration to date. Editor Nick Lowe shepherded the series at Marvel, with the collected hardcover edition featuring bonus material including plot excerpts, thumbnails, pencils, inks, and McNiven commentary on the creative process.
