Volume 3 of Shun Umezawa's Darwin's Incident opens on a quietly striking image: a young woman with an umbrella stands outside "Bluebeard's Diner" beside a large, gentle-faced chimpanzee-human hybrid clutching a red book, the two of them caught in a soft snowfall under the glow of a neon-lit night. The pairing feels unexpectedly tender — two figures who seem to belong to very different worlds sharing an ordinary, almost mundane moment on a city sidewalk. Umezawa's artwork does a lot of emotional work here, setting a contemplative tone that makes this a compelling entry in the series.
