In 2423, a pacifist scientist confronts the united Earth government’s plan to attack the peaceful Martians, proposing a test of their magnetic weapon on the moon. When the blast fails to register, the ruler suspects deception—until the scientist reveals the weapon’s true impact: the moon’s dark side was struck, altering its orbit and sending it crashing into Earth. The resulting chaos shatters the moon, unleashing devastation that wipes out humanity. Left alive, the scientist holds fast to his belief that he spared other worlds from Earth’s aggression.

In "There'll Be Some Changes Made," a man haunted by the gulf between his poverty and the opulence of a long-dead ancestor constructs a machine to steal his wealth—only to discover that even time and space can't make money matter when the world itself has changed.
