Eric Haven's Cryptoid announces itself with a wonderfully absurd cover image: a wide-eyed, broadly built figure in a white t-shirt reacts with alarm as his own arm stretches improbably upward, while a tiny armored gnome-like warrior — standing on an end table beside a lamp — jabs a spear into his midsection. The deadpan domestic setting makes the strangeness land all the funnier, and Haven's clean, expressive linework gives every bizarre detail an easy confidence. If you enjoy comics that treat the genuinely weird with a completely straight face, this 2020 Fantagraphics release deserves a look.
