Crossing Midnight #2
This second volume of Mike Carey's supernatural series collects issues #7-12, following the twin siblings Toshi and Kai as they become further entangled in the hidden world of Japanese spirit folklore. The story deepens the conflict between the two as they navigate their opposing roles as a guardian and a hunter of the supernatural, with the titular 'Map of Midnight' revealing the complex geography of the spirit realm.
In "A Map of Midnight Chapter Two," Yamada shares the haunting history of Aratsu and his enigmatic master, Asirosamiro the Sword-King, as the shadows deepen and secrets surface. On her first night hunting dreams, Toshi finds herself face-to-face with Ekobandur, a relentless servant of the Gleaner, in a battle that tests her courage and the fragile line between waking and nightmare.
In "A Map of Midnight Chapter Three," Toshi is rescued from a deadly attack in the park and brought before the enigmatic Lady Boss, a woman with a past as shadowed as her power. She reveals a shared history of servitude and now seeks Toshi’s aid in breaking free from the ancient demon Unco-Kamaro, whose grip on her is both binding and terrifying.
In "A Map of Midnight Chapter Four," Toshi is taken by the Gleaner, who sets her on a twisted game where her memories of her family begin to unravel. As shadows deepen and time bends, Kai is handed a weapon by Yamada, knowing it may be the only way to face Aratsu—but whether it will be enough remains uncertain.
