Crossing Midnight #1
This volume collects the first arc of the Vertigo series Crossing Midnight, written by Mike Carey with art by Jim Fern. The story follows twin siblings in modern-day Japan who become entangled with supernatural forces after one of them is marked by a mysterious blade at birth. Cut Here introduces a dark fantasy world blending Japanese folklore with horror, as the twins navigate a hidden realm of gods and monsters.
In "Cut Here Chapter 1" from *Crossing Midnight #1*, twins Toshi and Kai grow up under the shadow of their grandparents’ survival of the Nagasaki bombing, their lives shaped by quiet rituals and a family’s unspoken debt to the Kami. When Toshi’s hidden powers emerge, the spirit Aratsu arrives to claim her—accusing her father of breaking a sacred promise—and proves his threat by killing their beloved dog, Sen.
In "Cut Here Chapter 2," the Hara twins struggle to make sense of their dog’s sudden death, while Aratsu remains fixated on tracking down Kai. Toshi uncovers an old family legend from his grandmother, and later, Saburo appears—leading him on a dangerous journey through the city’s hidden sewers, where something ancient stirs beneath the streets.
In "Cut Here Chapter 4," Toshi ventures into Aratsu’s domain, drawn by forces beyond his understanding, while Kau stays behind, guarding his mother’s bedside as a swarm of demons closes in—only to find unexpected aid from the enigmatic Nidoru.
