Toshi and Kai are born twins. Their grandparents survived the Nagasaki nuclear bombing. To prevent side-effects, their parents gave offering to the Kami, spirits. As they grow up, Toshi is discovered to have special powers. One night, the spirit Aratsu comes to claim her. He claims her father offered nothing by name to the Kami, so he has chosen Toshi. When she refuses, he kills their beloved dog, Sen.
