Critters #13 from Fantagraphics delivers a cozy frontier mood courtesy of cover artist Freddy Milton, who sets two anthropomorphic companions — a blue rooster and a small green frog — around a crackling campfire beneath a moonlit forest sky, a steaming kettle hanging over the flames and a cup of something warm in the frog's hands. Covered wagons loom in the purple-tinged background, hinting at the westward-trail spirit of the interior story, "The Great Race." It's the kind of inviting funny-animal atmosphere that made Critters a standout anthology in 1987.
