Criminal Macabre: The Eyes of Frankenstein #3

Issue three of this four-part Dark Horse miniseries delivers one of the more unsettling cover images you'll find in 2013 horror comics: protagonist Cal McDonald is engulfed in a sea of enormous, bloodshot eyeballs, arms outstretched as though struggling to stay afloat, while two ghoulish faces — pale, red-eyed, and monstrous — peer out from the mass below him. Justin Erickson's cover work is genuinely arresting, with that wall-to-wall ocean of unblinking eyes making the title "The Eyes of Frankenstein" feel viscerally literal. Steve Niles and Christopher Mitten continue their macabre collaboration here, and if the cover is any indication, Cal is in very deep trouble.
