When Smith attempts to rob an old man who claims to have nothing but his cat, the man reveals himself to be a commissary official and sets a trap. Smith is caught attempting to break into the commissary, leading to his arrest and execution by firing squad, demonstrating the story's moral that crime inevitably results in punishment.
