☆ Be the first to review + Add to your collection — Join freeThis anthology issue features three western stories. "Jesse James" depicts the outlaw's final encounter with hunters seeking his bounty, ending with his assassination. "Lumber Jack—No Joke" follows the comedic misadventures of an impatient logger who wants to be first in the payroll line at a lumber camp, leading to slapstick confrontations. A third story involves a deputy attempting to lead a posse against a varmint gang hiding in the hills near Twin Peaks, but is ultimately forced to cooperate with the gang's leader, Shifty, to achieve his objective.
Wild Bill Hickok runs a lonely station near Rock Creek, Kansas, when the McCandlas brothers demand he abandon his post and join the Civil War—conveniently leaving behind the company's valuable herd of horses for them to steal. When Bill refuses and the brothers return to force the issue, a brutal gunfight erupts that will cement his reputation as a formidable lawman. This is the legendary encounter that made Wild Bill a name to be feared across the Old West.
Molasses Mouth is convinced that black cats bring bad luck—but when his friend points out that finding money after a black cat crossed his path sounds pretty lucky, Molasses Mouth's twisted logic proves there's no arguing with superstition. It's a quick, clever bit of humor that shows how a stubborn believer can turn good fortune into proof of a curse.
Lumber Jack grows impatient waiting in the payroll line and tries to muscle his way to the front, only to get shoved back by another worker who's had enough of his antics. When the burly lumberjack questions whether that push was serious, he gets a definitive answer—and realizes this is no laughing matter.
When Mule Ears spots a cowpoke wandering around town with a cryptic sign strapped to his chest, he decides to get to the bottom of the mystery—only to discover the fellow's explanation is even more befuddling than the sign itself. This quick gag from 1955 proves that sometimes the answer raises more questions than it solves.
When a gang of outlaws uses a dark secret from his past as leverage, the newly reformed Shifty finds himself trapped between duty and blackmail—forced to betray Tom Mix and the law, or face the noose for a murder he witnessed years ago. As Tom pursues the criminals wreaking havoc across Dobie, Shifty must decide whether to surrender to coercion or break free from the chain that binds him. It's a tense showdown between loyalty and survival in this high-stakes western tale.
